Our Last Nature Center Field Trip

I can't believe I forgot my camera! On our last, and I would say best, field trip to the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center I forgot my camera. You're going to need to rely on my description of events and your child's memory to get the details.

Somehow, despite the terrible weather predictions, there was no rain to hamper our trip. We had a beautiful, sunny, warm day and the students were able to spend the day outside.  The day had three major activities: ponding, wetland animal petting zoo, and the creature feature.

The students started out the day ponding.  Ponding entailed dipping into different ponds with strainers and then examining the creatures caught.  Students were able to observe animals like mosquito larvae and pernicious diving beetles.

After, they learned a little bit about some of the larger creatures that live in Wisconsin ponds.  These included turtles, frogs, and salamanders.  Animals were brought out on display and students were allowed to touch some of them.

The day ended with a "creature feature." During the creature feature some of the animals that we caught during the day were brought out and projected on a screen so that the students could get a larger look at them while learning a bit more about what made each unique.

It really is a beautiful place and I encourage all of you to use one of the free passes you received this year and visit at least once this summer.

Field Trip Monday

We have our last field trip to the Audubon Nature Center on Monday. This is one of my favorite trips of the school year. We are scheduled to go Ponding. During this trip we explore the ponds located in the nature center and investigate the pond life that lives in them.

Looking at the forecast for Monday, the weather does not seem to be cooperating with us. The Audubon Center always has an inside backup plan should the weather be terrible. However, I urge everyone to dress for the weather! The nature center tends to take us outside unless the weather is awful, so plan ahead with rain boots and play clothes.

Schlitz Audubon Nature Center

Friday we had our most recent field trip to the Audubon Nature center. During this latest trip, the students learned about song birds, birds of prey, and how birds navigate their routes during their annual migrations.

The highlight of the trip was the "Meet and Greet" with the center's raptors. Teachers at the Audubon Center brought the birds around for each student to closely examine while another teacher taught the students about each bird's personal history as well as details about the species in general. Afterwards, the children were able to watch other birds as they flew across the room.

Other parts of the trip included the children navigating the center while watching for birds, cleaning the beach, and playing a game of "Owl and Mouse" where children were able to experience how an owl hunts without seeing its prey.

Field Trip Tomorrow

Tomorrow is our next field trip. We will be going to the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center again. Based on the forecast it seems likely that we will be inside for the duration of the trip. Remember though, this is a nature center, and they do their best to take each group outside to experience nature.  Please, be prepared to walk outside. Umbrellas won't be necessary, because we won't be outside in the rain; however, rain boots would be a good idea. If we go outside, the trails will obviously be quite muddy.

Worms?

For our latest field trip today, the students came home with an unusual souvenir-worms.

On our trip to the botanical gardens today, the students learned about different types of soil and a little about worms. Our class left the trip with our very own "Vermiculture" bucket. Over the course of the next two months we will be saving some of our morning food scraps and putting it into a bucket that contains some soil and worms. As the worms eat our scraps, they will produce waste, called "worm castings," that is an excellent soil.

If we do our jobs right, when we visit Boerner Botanical Gardens again in June, we should have a bucket of dirt and twice as many worms as we do now.

Field Trip

Reminder-We have our next field trip to Boerner Botanical Gardens on Wednesday, March 27. We will be back in time for lunch, but please remember to dress for the weather.

What a great field trip!

Today the students took their second field trip to the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center and it was fantastic!

The first portion of the trip found the children learning about three different habitats-forest, prairie, and pond. During the discussion the students learned about the things that each habitat provides to help organisms survive. Students then set off on a hike around the Audubon Center where they explored the different habitats and learned a little more about them first hand.

During the second part of the trip the students learned a little bit more about Native American history and culture. It began with what was, for many, the highlight of the trip-a Native American dance demonstration. For this portion, an Apache spoke to our class and performed the "Grass Dance" for us. He then led some students in another dance and exposed us to traditional song. Throughout it all he spoke a little bit about himself, his outfit, and Native American Culture.

Following, the students explored some artifacts pertaining to Native Americans of the past and were able to enter a Wigwam that was still under construction.

The trip was fantastic, be sure to ask your child about it. To see the pictures larger, click on the slide show.

Field Trip Tomorrow!

Just a quick reminder that our field trip to the Schlitz Audubon Nature center is tomorrow. A portion of this trip will be outside, so please remember to dress for the weather. Snow-pants  boots, hats, and gloves are a must. Also remember that our bus will be leaving promptly at 8:30. Get to school on time or you'll miss the bus!

Field Trip

Yesterday the third grade classes took their second field trip to the Boerner Botanical Gardens. This field trip found the students working hard to understand the various parts of the plants and their functions. Each part of the plant was explained, and the students then had the opportunity to examine, dissect  and, much to the children's delight, eat the plant parts. Among the parts looked at were stems (celery), fruit (kiwi), and seeds (lima beans).

We will be attending two more trips to the gardens. The next one is sure to be very interesting-vermiculture is the topic. Click on the slide show to go to the web album.

Field Trip Postponed

Mrs. Lew and I are very sad to announce that we are forced to postpone our January 16 field trip. We don't have the rescheduled date yet, but it will be sometime in the first half of February.

The permission slip that you have already signed remains valid and the price will be the same as well. If you have not yet paid, I ask that you send your money soon. As soon as we receive word from the Audubon Center we will let you know the new date.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Operation Move

Just a quick reminder that tomorrow is our field trip to "Operation Move." We will be gone all day, so please remember to pack your child a lunch.

Wednesday, November 28

Operation MOVE

Kozy students in grades 3-5 have the opportunity to attend the Operation MOVE field trip event on December 11. For those parents with older children, this trip is being presented by the same organization that held the Read it to Beat it read aloud that your child participated in last year.

The event, part of WinterFest, is held at the US Cellular Arena and will stress the importance of exercise as part of a healthy life style. As part of the event, students will hear from local celebrities, community leaders, and athletes such as Greg Jennings from the Green Bay Packers.

For full details, go to: http://www.milwaukeewinterfest.com/event/operation-move

We needed to use a new permission slip form, and we were rushed to get it out to you early enough, so we are lacking two pieces of information usually found on our field trip forms. If your child would like to order a bag lunch, or if you would like to chaperone, please indicate that anywhere on the form where there is space.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Field Trip Movies

On our field trip to the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, the students took their iPads and used them to take pictures of the various events. Back at school, the students worked in groups and turned those pictures into videos using the iPads and an app called Pinnacle. The all worked hard and did a nice job creating their first movie.

To see all of the videos, visit the "Student Work" portion of our classroom website, or click here.

Field Trip Tomorrow

Tomorrow is our field trip to the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. This is a "rain or shine" field trip, so please dress your child for the weather. Should there be excessive rain, there is an indoor plan.

Please remember that, unless your child ordered a lunch from school, they will need to pack a bag lunch. If you are chaperoning this trip, you also must bring a bag lunch; there is no place to buy a lunch at the Audubon Center.

Here is the current forecast for tomorrow:
chancerainOvercast with rain showers in the afternoon. High of 54F. Winds from the SW at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 60%

Field Trip to Boerner Botanical Gardens

From the first day of school, the students have been learning about plants, plant parts, and seeds. To accompany these topics, the students will be going on a series of four field trips to the Boerner Botanical Gardens. Each of these trips will be about plants, but each will focus on a different aspect. Today the third grades went on the first trip of the series and learned about seeds, their similarities and differences, and why

Our First Field Trip

Today your child brought home a permission slip for the first field tip of the school year. This trip is to the Boerner Botanical Gardens and will be held this coming Tuesday, September 25. Because this field trip is next week, we do not have time to perform background checks on parent volunteers. Consequently, only those parents who have previously been cleared on a background check will be allowed to chaperone on this trip. I apologize if this causes an inconvenience. There will be seven more field trips this year so parents who would like to chaperone should have ample opportunity.

Ice Skating!

Yesterday was third grade's field trip to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Pettit Ice Center.

We started our day at the MSO where the children were able to listen to, and learn about, parts of several of Mozart's operas as well as others inspired by Mozart.  Music included pieces from The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figero, and even West Side Story.  The children all behaved wonderfully and seemed to enjoy it.

After leaving the symphony, we went to the Pettit National Ice Center to ice skate.  Each year I am amazed at how much better the children get after only a short time on the ice.  Children always start the session hugging the walls, but end it skating around like pros.  Some even started skating backwards!

Read it to Beat it Challenge

Yesterday we all enjoyed our field trip to the US Cellular Arena to be part of "Read it to Beat it." We joined over 4,500 other students to break the world's record for the largest read aloud.

Prior to the event, each student recieved a "goodie bag" containing gift certificates, a new book, and a United Way t-shirt.  We were then entertained by mascots from the Bucks, Admirals, and Wave as well as WMYX's Van "The Man" McNeal as he energized the crowd for the exciting event.

The main attraction began when Ryan Grant, Craig Counsell, and Tom Barrett began reading to us from three different books.  After they had succesffuly read to us for over 30 minutes, and the attendance was confirmed, the record was broken and the event will be listed in the Guiness Book of World's Records.

After lunch, the students were entertained by shows from the Milwaukee County Zoo and the Schlitz Audubon Center.  These shows taught the students about Wisconsin's bird's of prey and about the importance of the honey bee.

To watch a brief newscast of the event, click here.  At about the one minute point, see if you can spot one of Kozy's teachers.  To see more pictures, click here.
