Accelerated Reader

As we end the first quarter and begin the second, I wanted to take a moment to congratulate the students that reached their AR goals and to explain what I expect of the students in the second quarter.

The Accelerated Reader program assigns each book a point value based on its length and difficulty. Near the beginning of the first quarter, each student was assigned a point goal that he or she was expected to reach prior to the end of the quarter. The point goal was based on each child's reading level; stronger readers were expected to read more points. The following students reached their goal.

  • Bri
  • Makayla
  • Alexandra
  • Esteban
  • Aubree
  • Thomas
  • Ashlyn
  • ...................
  • Michael
  • Dylan
  • Cheyene
  • Hunter
  • Gabriel
  • Isabella
  • Zachary
  • ...............

Today, I reassessed everyone's reading level and set new goals for the second quarter. I based their new reading levels on their guided reading levels in class, their success on their first quarter AR tests at various levels, as well as a test Accelerated Reader produces designed to gauge student reading levels.

Using these new reading levels I assigned each student a point goal based on the assumption that all students should be reading a minimum  of 20 minutes each night. If students read an appropriate amount of time nightly, they should have no trouble reaching their goals. However, should a student begin falling behind his or her goal, he or she will stay in for recess to read until they have caught up.

All student goals can be viewed using AR Home Connect. Students will receive their new goals on Wednesday when they receive their new index card prior to library checkout.
